What is a Clear Credential?

In California, credentialing is a two-step process. The first credential a teacher needs to earn is a Preliminary Credential. If you are new to the teaching profession, you would first work towards your Preliminary Credential. Within five years of earning a Preliminary Credential, a California teacher must earn a Clear Credential from an approved Induction Program. A teacher cannot start working towards a Clear Credential until he/she has earned a Preliminary Credential. CGU has a Preliminary Credential + MA Program and an Induction Program. CGU's Induction Program is a great alternative to BTSA, a district-run Induction Program. CGU also has a "Direct to Clear Path" that allows a person to earn a Preliminary Credential, a Master of Arts in Education, and a Clear Credential in just two years (with the option for the last year to be done while living outside of Southern California). This is the most expedited route to full credentialing.

Who should get a Clear Credential?

Anyone who has a Preliminary California Teaching Credential. In California, credentialing is a two-step process. The first credential a teacher needs to earn is a Preliminary Credential. The second credential is a Clear Credential. Teachers should earn their Clear Credential within five years of earning their Preliminary Credential.

Why Earn A Clear Credential at CGU?

Quality.
Principals tell us our teachers graduate akin to 4th or 5th year teachers and are among the best in California. Indeed, our graduates have been named Teacher of the Year in California, Los Angeles County, and San Bernardino County (2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012). Our reputation for quality means our teachers are highly recruited and are often fast-tracked into leadership. Alumni tell us "I got hired because I am from CGU...I got promoted because of what I learned at CGU."

Affordable.
Our Induction Program is more affordable than you'd think! Contact us for a one-on-one financial consultation. Professional Credit Units (PCUs) offered at $175 a credit. Graduate Units offered at a 25% discount. Plus, our program "pops" teachers on district pay scales. Lastly, we offer fellowships and loans to eligible students.

Fast.
CGU's Induction Program is just two semesters (compared to a 2-year BTSA program).

Personalized to the teacher.
Participating Teachers work with a mentor to design a program that matches their unique professional needs and interests. No cookie-cutter mold used!

No employment needed.

Participating Teachers need not be fully employed. As part of the application process, the Participating Teacher will be asked to provide information regarding his/her proposed Clinical Setting. CGU's Induction Coordinator will determine if the proposed Clinical Setting is appropriate using the following criteria:

  • Standards-Based Curriculum. Setting must allow Participating Teacher to design & implement lessons based on the California content standards in the subject of the PT's credential.
  • Length of service. For Fall and Spring Terms: must be a minimum of 12 weeks per term, with a minimum of 3 hours of instructional time per week teaching the same group of students. For Summer Term: must be a minimum of 4 weeks, with a minimum of 9 hours of instructional time per week teaching the same group of students. Smallest group of students, regardless of term: 5.

The following settings could be appropriate for CGU's Induction Program as long as they meet the criteria identified above:

  • Public School District - traditional setting
  • Non-public school
  • Private school - nonsectarian
  • Pre-school
  • Rehabilitation center/hospital
  • Public school district - alternative setting
  • Charter school

Clear while living in Southern California...or not!
CGU's Induction Program offers two different modes of delivery:

  • Geo(graphically)-Near
  • Geo(graphically)-Far

The Geo-Near Option is ideal for those living in Southern California. These Participating Teachers will do the Clinical Component of the program in a setting close to CGU (approximately within 40 miles), will take classes at CGU's main campus, and have face-to-face contact with their Induction Support Provider/Mentor and faculty.

The Geo-Far Option is perfect for those who don't want to have to come to CGU's Claremont campus. Clear while residing in Anaheim, Alabama, Antarctica or anywhere else! Support is provided via virtual tools. CGU can introduce Participating Teachers to leadership at Clinical Settings outside of the USA. We are told that CGU's Induction  Program is the only program that allows teachers to clear while working abroad.

Units can be applied to a MA or PhD Program at CGU.
The graduate units earned in the Academic Component of CGU's Induction Program can be applied to a MA or PhD from CGU's School of Educational Studies if the Participating Teacher is admitted into such a program. Our Induction Program is a great way to jump start one's graduate studies!
