Dr. Hess is a practical theologian, that is one who intentionally places theology and various forms of cultural wisdom into a mutually critical conversation with one another. As reflected in her book Caretakers of Our Common House: Women's Development in Communities of Faith, she does practical theology from an explicitly feminist perspective. She is also a novelist, and is doing the final editing on Deserving, a story written from her life as (as well as her research into) a Second Generation Holocaust Survivor. Her scholarly passions move her to explore creativity and Life in the Spirit, the dynamics of community life, liberative processes of education (including conversation and story), and the nature of justice as participation. As one of Jewish/Cherokee/Irish descent, she works to engage diversities within as well as diversities outside. She is currently working on a book entitled Fiction as Soul Truth: The Use of Fiction in Theology and Education. Ordained as a PCUSA minister, Dr. Hess has served the church in pastoral capacities.
