REL 302         Backgrounds of Contemporary Theology

A selected study of major theologians from the Reformation to the twentieth century. Readings and lectures are designed to show how constructive and useful theology was done in the past and can be done in the present.

REL 487         Reconstructing Paul Tillich

Thoroughly steeped in modern philosophy yet judged by many as too radical, Paul Tillich played a crucial role in the theological revolution of the second half of the 20th century.  We attempt to reconstruct his thought as a systematic response to the modern “crisis of God.”  In what ways can Tillich’s approach continue to guide theologians and philosophers as they struggle to formulate a constructive language of faith?

REL 310         Intertextuality: Re-reading Scripture

In this course, we will trace the development and history of different biblical texts. Texts will be followed as they are read and re-read in different contexts, going from the Hebrew Bible, over the Greek Septuagint, the texts from the Judean Desert, the Pseudepigrapha, and ending in the New Testament.

REL 467         Parties and Identities in Ezra

In the book of Ezra we find the account of the restoration and rebuilding of the Temple of Jerusalem, followed by an account of Ezra’s arrival and activities.  We will focus on the religious and political identities of the characters and parties encountered in the book.
