Museum Studies Concentration

Students enrolled in the Master of Arts Degree in Cultural Studies may complete a concentration in Museum Studies. If you have not declared your concentration, please fill out the "Change of degree or field"form and submit to the department chair.

Required courses for the concentration include:  

  • Introduction to Cultural Studies I and II
  • Field Research Methods
  • Two Museum Theory and History Seminars 
  • Internship

Additional units shall be completed in courses offered by the Cultural Studies Department, other CGU departments, and/or by approved courses taught by faculty of The Claremont Colleges. For residence and other general requirements, see the "Degree Regulations" section of the Bulletin. Students may also complete the museum studies concentration with a Ph.D. 

Other Requirements for the MA:

  • A Research Tool: An approved research methods course or approved equivalent. (e.g. foreign language). Students must receive a B+ or better in an approved methods course to satisfy the research tool requirement. Please ensure that upon successful completion of the course you initiate the processing of the Research Tool Form.

  • A final research paper or equivalent

    Masters students will also be required to produce either a paper of publishable quality or an equivalent form of cultural production that includes an analytic component (e.g., performance and interpretation, exhibit or analysis). 
  • The candidate must demonstrate reading proficiency in one language other than English.

    Additional Requirements for the Ph.D. 

  • One of three fields for the qualifying exams will be in museum studies (this in lieu of the MA final research paper).
