Jennifer Hawthorn-Mayes, M.A. in Applied Women's Studies, 2009
“The Applied Women's Studies program drew my attention with its emphasis on practical applications for real world change, its flexibility and proximity to the talented Professors who helped form and shape the program. My time as a student in the AWS program was very inspiring! Teaming with fellow students, learning from gifted mentors and collaborating with professionals working for justice in their fields was a dream come true for me.
The options and resources available to me as a graduate student at CGU and the Claremont Colleges were vital in sculpting my educational experience, my journey as a professional and a parent. While living in campus housing my husband and I were able to homebirth our first two children. Becoming a mother as a graduate student was a lovely gift in many ways. My advisor, faculty and staff were always very supportive of me as both a student and mother. My children were lucky to begin their lives and grow as young members of a thriving academic community!
The seeds for beginning a nonprofit organization were planted early during an AWS core class and continued to be cultivated throughout my internships. Having a vision, being driven by your strengths and hopes, connecting with skilled and accomplished faculty through innovative coursework combine in Applied Women's Studies to provide students with unique and valuable scholarship as well as essential skills to go forth and put our theories into practice.”
