Depth from Defocus

Sponsor: Newport Corporation

Newport manufactures optical equipment and the current project relates to fiber optics, in particular to laser diodes. These diodes are made from semiconductor material and their operation takes plance on a flat surface, approximately 200 microns square, onto which two trenches have been etched. The goal is to ascertain the accordance with specifications of the manufacturing process by photographic images.

If a number of images, at fixed focus, are taken at varying heights above the surface, the images will all be out of focus. However the blur of each image will depend on the height above the surface and the surface topography. The aim of the project is to ascertain topography depth features from a sequence of out-of-focus images at various heights.
