Computing Labs
Two computing labs at SMS are equipped with PC computers for mathematical software such as Matlab and Mathematica.

MathLab-North: 8 PCs, Wireless network (sms) connection available

  • Hours: Open 24/7 for SMS students/faculty
    9 am - 5 pm for all other students/faculty enrolled in SMS courses or by appointment
  • Software: Matlab, Mathematica, LaTeX, MS Office, Ghost View, ...
  • Operating System: Windows 2000, Linux on select computers

MathLab-South: 2 PCs, Wireless network (sms) connection available

  • Hours: 9 am - 5 pm M-F
  • Software: Matlab, Mathematica, LaTeX, MS Office, Ghost View, ...
  • Operating System: Windows XP, Windows 2000

Wireless Network (CGU ACAD):
In both labs, CGU ACAD wireless access point is available for laptop users. Once you connect to CGU ACAD network, your internet browser connect you to logon page. You need to logon to use the wireless network. Use your Email username and password to logon. For guest access, provide your email address in Guest login form on the left of the page.

Printing:
Black and white laserjet printers are available for SMS students/faculty at Mathlab-North and South free of charge for academic purpose. Please be courteous for using papers and printers in the labs and be cautious of printing transparency on the laserjet printers. 

To use an SMS printer from a registered laptop computer, add one of the following printers as a TCP/IP printer.

To add TCP/IP printer for XP/2000 (For this instruction with prictures, click here)

  1. Click "Start", Click "Printers and Faxes", Click "Add a printer" ==>  "Add Priner Wizard" pops up
  2. Click "Next", Check "Local printer attached to the computer" but Uncheck "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer", Click "Next"
  3. Check "Create a new port", Click on drop down menu, Select "Standard TCP/IP port" ==> Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wisard" pops up
  4. Click "Next", Enter an IP address from the above table in "Printer Name or IP Address" pane (Port Name will be assigned automatically), Click "Finish"
  5. "Add Printer Wizard" will then display manufacturer and model seletion window, Find the correct model according to the above table, Click "Next", Enter a name of the printer for your laptop, Click "Next", and click "Next" again to send a test page to the printer. Click "Finish".

Data Storage:
100MB Zip Drives and Floppy drives are available to back up your data. On select computers CD-RW drive is also available. Saved personal data on local hard drive in both labs would not be guaranteed to remain on the hard drive.

 Online Data Storage (WFS):
CGU has personal online data storage of 100MB at http://wfs.cgu.edu/<username>. (-- replace <username> with your CGU username.) For instructions using the web file system, please refer to this document.
