'Global Strategy and Trade' Course in Oxford

Plans in Motion for Drucker/CGU

“Global Strategy and Trade” Course in Oxford

An Information Session is scheduled for March 1, 2007, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., in Burkle 22 as plans are finalized for this year’s Oxford Management 401/TNDY 401K “Global Strategy and Trade” course.  Organized by the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management, this transdisciplinary course is offered in partnership with St. Peter’s College, Oxford.

This year’s program is scheduled for July 15 through July 26 and marks the seventh year that the Drucker Graduate School and St. Peter’s College have collaborated.  Under the joint faculty leadership of Professor Cornelis de Kluyver and Professor Emile Pilafides, the course is open to MBA, EMP, Ph.D. and other CGU and Claremont Consortium students and qualifies as a required Ph.D. level CGU transdisciplinary course.  The course will carry four units of credit.  A limited number of opportunities exist to extend credit to six or eight units through independent study. At the March Information Session, Professors de Kluyver and Pilafidis will provide an overview of the course and give details regarding cost, housing arrangements and registration.

Professor de Kluyver characterizes the course as having two major objectives: (1) to study the political, economic and cultural dimensions of globalization as they impact corporate strategy and international trade:  (2) to gain a deeper understanding of the evolving European business environment.

For 12 intensive days, students will attend lectures, visit companies, debate trade policy issues, and attend cultural events.  As Professor Pilafidis notes, “It is an immersion course for students who wish to have the opportunity to hear different points of views from leadership in the economic, political and legal arenas.”  Following the model of prior years, there will be lectures by Oxford Professors, Senior Executives of European corporations, and politicians. Significant field trips to local firms are also being planned. Last year, students visited the headquarters of the HSBC Banking Institute and the Rothschild Investment and Banking firm, as well as the BMW and Jacquard automobile companies.  Historical and cultural tours and events around Oxford are also being planned, including theater and formal dinner activities.

Dwight Holmes, EMBA student who participated in last year’s program says, “The intent of the Oxford experience is to immerse the student in a world of business outside the confines of the United States to achieve an objective worldview.  By all measures, the program accomplishes its goal and then some.”

The course includes a number of class sessions in Claremont before the Oxford trip, and requires a number of reading and other assignments in advance of the trip.  The course also includes a team project culminating in a presentation to the faculty and other students.

The March Information Session is open to anyone who is interested in this unique study opportunity.   For those unable to attend this session, email to the following for additional information:
