Student Interns Put Drucker Principles Into Action

When Drucker students interned in southland companies this past summer, they not only gained first-hand knowledge of today’s corporate climate, but were able to integrate Drucker-style principles and knowledge into their daily work experiences. Under the guidance of Dr. Jenny Derroch, seven students participated in the Field Study class, including one who launched his own business. Students concluded that the experience allowed them to turn textbook theories into significant real-work practices.

As stated by Financial Engineering student Anupum Kumar, who worked at Countrywide Financial Corporation in the Enterprise Risk Assessment Group-- “As a summer intern, I gained a level of experience and exposure to an industry that I could have never achieved in a classroom. I found it extremely valuable to be able to apply what I’ve learned in school to a real work environment.”

Student Noriaki Sugisaka agreed saying, “The Field Study class really helped me to combine my MBA classroom knowledge with real-world investment techniques. I also learned the effectiveness of strong communication skills and the value of developing client trust.”

Drucker interns had key responsibilities and contributed significantly to operations of the companies they served. Student Jessica Kusmana worked as a Tax Analyst at HdL Coren and Cone.HdL. Kusmana’s responsibilities included identifying tax allocation errors and providing ongoing analysis to support economic development in cities and counties and maximization of cities’ revenues. Her duties specifically focused on projects related to the overall HdL mission.

Financial Engineering student Sudha Sethuraman worked in the Quantitative Research Department of Advisor Software, Inc. (ASI) and was responsible for modeling future education expenses for the average investor. ASI offers solutions to improve the quality and delivery of investment advice provided by financial advisors.

Hiroaki Ueno had oversight responsibilities for sales and marketing at Calsoft Systems, an IT integrator. While at Calsoft, Ueno developed the San Francisco and New York markets and contributed to the development of the company’s planned IPO for 2009. He also contributed towards efforts that enabled Calsoft to expand into the Japanese market.

Monique Wang spent her internship in Taipei where she worked at Synovate, a Hong Kong based company that specializes in market research and communication. Wang’s responsibilities focused on the Textron account which is the world’s largest helicopter manufacturer.
