Noted Author Daniel Pink Addresses CGU...

Advocates 'Right-Brain' Thinking for Challenges in Next Economy

Daniel H. Pink, popular author of two best-selling business books, “A Whole New Mind” and “Free Agent Nation” addressed CGU faculty on January 10 at the Claremont Graduate University.  His presentation, which was a part of the CGU thought-leaders meeting series, focused on concepts in his book, “A Whole New Mind,” which depicts a shift from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age.

Pink’s remarks centered on a theory that development of “right-brain” skill sets to complement “left-brain” skills will be required for Americans to stay in the forefront at meeting challenges of a new economy.  With the notion that power will eventually shift to people who possess strong right brain qualities, Pink advocates personal development of six right brain “senses”—design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning—for personal success in the Conceptual Age.

In addressing growing trends of abundance (personal wealth,) Asia (outsourcing) and automation (software driven decision making) in America, Pink cautioned that routine jobs will continue to be completed in the cheapest way possible and in the cheapest locations.  He also noted that automation will continue to take over some routine functions found in areas like accounting and legal services, for example.

Speaking of a “middle class phenomenon,” Pink reported that more than ever, people are more concerned with quality of life than with money.

Known for his influential books, Pink has written speeches for Al Gore and Robert Reisch and is a contributor to Wired magazine.  His latest research interest is the cultural phenomenon of the Manga (cartoon) novel sweeping through the Japanese publishing industry.
