  FAQ

Congratulations on your admission to the Financial Engineering Program, a joint venture between the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management and the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Here at the Financial Engineering Program, we pride ourselves on making each year better than the last, and we rely on students like you to help us continue on our path to excellence. We are excited to welcome you to the FE family and into our next class of students. Preparing to attend the program is an important part of your life and we want to make this transition as easy as possible for you.

This link to the Office of Real Estate and Housing, is where you can find housing information around the Claremont community. This is another link that will direct you to our Office of Career Management. OCM can help facilitate the process of finding a job, help update resumes, enhance interviewing skills and much more.

If you are an international student, we encourage you to visit
International Place (nicknamed I-Place). I-Place provides newly admitted international students with an array of services. They offer airport pickup services, provide temporary lodging with host families while students find permanent housing, and help inform students of changing international laws.

Finally, you will find instructions on how to register for your courses and other curricular information below. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the registration process, please feel free to contact Albert Ramos at
albert.ramos@cgu.edu or by phone at (909) 621-8067.

Registration

A word of notice: CGU is part of the Claremont Consortium which includes Pomona, Pitzer, Scripps, Harvey Mudd and Claremont McKenna Colleges. As such, you are allowed, with the permission of the professor, to take classes in these colleges for graduate credit, should CGU courses conflict with your schedule. The location of these courses is indicated by the letters PO (Pomona) CM (Claremont McKenna) and HM (Harvey Mudd) next to the 3-digit course number. If no abbreviations exist, the class is held at CGU.

To begin your registration, peruse through the List of Courses and select the courses you wish to take. As a new entering student, however, you are limited as to the classes you can take.

First year students are required to take Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance, and Probability in their first semester, as indicated by the
Course Planning Guide. To complete the program in 3 semesters, it is important to also enroll in an elective. We recommend taking MGT 475 Selected Topics in Finance: Fixed Income; this will provide important background information in preparation for Financial Derivatives in the spring. For students already familiar with this topic, and who do not have experience with Matlab, we recommend the online course Math 364 Introduction to Scientific Computing.

Course descriptions and prerequisites for core classes can be found by clicking on the respective course name on the FE Curriculum Page. For course descriptions and prerequisites for electives, see the Electives Document. The Syllabus, text book(s) information, and weekly topics list, are available for most fall classes on the Course Syllabi Page.

Once you have made your selections, fill out the
Course Registration Form. Please be sure to fill out the form completely and sign your name at the bottom. See the sample registration form for more information.

Once you are done, you can scan the form and e-mail it back to us at
albert.ramos@cgu.edu, or you can fax it to (909) 607-9104. Please include a cover sheet and address it to Financial Engineering.

Auditing Courses

By taking 12 or more units per semester, you are eligible to audit up to 4 units at no extra tuition cost. These may be in the form of one 4 unit class or two 2 unit classes. To audit a course, make sure to place a check in the “audit box” on the Course Registration Form.

Audit Policy:

  • Students who wish to audit a course must acquire the instructor’s written permission and a written summary of the minimum expectations by the instructor prior to registering for the course or by the end of the first class session, whichever comes first. Please contact the FE office at albert.ramos@cgu.edu for assistance with contacting instructors.
  • CGU minimum expectations are 80% attendance and participation or equivalent as deemed by the instructor.
  • Students who meet the instructor’s expectations will receive a positive mark for the course as indicated by the notation “AU” on his/her transcript.
  • Students who do not participate in the course as agreed upon with the instructor at the beginning of the course are subject to being withdrawn form the course by the instructor or registrar. Students who are withdrawn after the deadline to drop a course (noted on the academic calendar) will be penalized with a mark of “W” on the transcript for the course.

Transferring Courses

For those of you who have completed graduate course work, please be advised that you may be eligible to transfer up to 8 units of approved graduate semester coursework. If you feel you are eligible to transfer units, please send us the course description as obtained from your schools website, the length of the class, the number of units, and the grade you received. Remember that you must have had to receive the equivalent of a "B" grade or better to transfer in credit.

Additionally, please fill out the Transfer Request Form and send it, along with the above information, to the FE office at albert.ramos@cgu.edu.

Please note: because of the reduced units in Dual Degree programs, Dual Degree students will not be permitted to transfer in coursework. For this reason, petitioning to  waive a course may be more appropriate.

All transfer requests must be submitted prior to starting your first semester at CGU.

Waiving Courses

If you have not completed graduate coursework, but have extensive training in probability, statistics, accounting or corporate finance, you may be eligible to waive one or more of these courses. The program directors will evaluate your prior coursework if you wish to try to take advantage of this option. Unlike a transfer, you will still be required to complete all 48 units, but you may substitute an appropriate elective for a required course, adding value to your overall education.

Please send an email to albert.ramos@cgu.edu for all requests regarding waiving a course. Having taken only one course in a topic will not qualify for a course to be "waived".
