Diagnostic Examinations:  Students entering the 48-unit PhD program are required to take a four (4) hour diagnostic examination in their area of specialization. This exam is required in addition to any breadth examinations taken in order to fulfill the three breadth areas. Dual-degree students will take the diagnostic breadth exam in their area of specialization before beginning the last 48-units of their degree. 72-unit PhD students are not required to take the diagnostic examination. Guidelines for the diagnostic exam will be sent to entering PhD students in May.

*All Ph.D. students are required to have a reading knowledge of German and French (Spanish is a possible substitute for some programs), and such other languages as necessary for their field of study. Students are encouraged to acquire knowledge of German and French before beginning the Ph.D. program, and are required to attempt an examination in one language before beginning the last 48 units of doctoral studies. CGU offers non-credit intensive courses in French and German during the summer session.  Each language exam is $25, payable in cash at the beginning of the exam.
