RELIGION 323 1415 1 The Origins & Influence of the Zoroastrian Tradition
Description
This course will examine the background and beginnings of the religion of Zarathushtra. We will study the role of the religion in the three great Iranian Empires – Achaemenid, Parthian and Sasanian – and consider its relationship with other developing religions of the period, including Judaism, Buddhism, Manichaeism, Christianity and Islam. The course will then focus on the forms and function of Zoroastrianism in Iran, India, and the diaspora up to the present day, and its impact upon some of the great European literati, such as Voltaire, Mozart, the Romantic poets and Nietzsche.
