RELIGION 407HB 1268 1 Introduction to Mesopotamian Religion
Description
This course seeks to understand ancient Mesopotamian religion and, in the process, unpack many modern notions of what constitutes religion. The students will do this through looking at the various areas through which we can understand Mesopotamian religion including such things as: texts, religious structures, references to religious officials, the relationship between church and state, sacrifice, and other artifacts often treated as “religious.” Each student will view these different areas through the lens of one particular Mesopotamian deity so they can understand both how the religious system functioned on the macro and micro levels.”
