This seminar in philosophical theology and the philosophy of religion explores the history and core concepts of Existentialism and Atheism by means of a close reading of the central texts, including (time allowing) Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, Camus, Jaspers, Berdyaev, and leading contemporary atheists. Both religious and anti-religious versions of both traditions will be examined. The course presupposes that both Existentialism and Atheism remain important philosophical schools and that religious thinkers and practitioners should be thoroughly familiar with both.
