These "foundational" American texts will be taught in literary and historical context from the post-American Revolutionary/ Early National Period; the pre and post-Civil War Era; the Age of Industrialism; the Victorian, Edwardian and Gilded Ages to the First World War; the Roaring Twenties; Modernism; the Great Depression; the Second World War and the various civil rights movements of the Post World War II period; Multiculturalism, and Postmodernism. We will analyze the ways in which these narratives embody cultural values that are shaped by the political and economic period in which they were written.
