Subj Cat# Class# Sect Course
TNDY 404R 1461 1 Scientism in the Modern and Contemporary Worlds
Description
Starting from the content explored in my Science and Scientism in Nineteenth Century Europe (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2008), this course would explore the widespread belief that the methods, activities, concepts, and attitudes associated with and appropriated from the natural sciences provide the best and perhaps the only legitimate way of gaining knowledge and guiding action as it has been extended into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and out of Europe and America into the rest of the world. Emphasis would be on the origins and spread of both Scientific Management and Eugenic ideas and practices
