On-Campus

F-1 students work on campus without express-written permission, up to 20 hours per week during school time, and up to 40 hours per week during school breaks (Winter vacation and Summer semester). J-1 students are eligible for the same work time periods but must have express-written permission from the Assistant Director of International Services (or their Responsible Officer if CGU is not their sponsoring institution).

Your total time must be less than or equal to 20 hours, including any authorized part-time Curricular Practical Training (F-1 CPT, please see below) or Academic Training (J-1).

F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows you to work off-campus while a student at CGU.  Please refer to the F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) handout for information and eligiblity requirements.  To be granted CPT, the F-1 Curricular Practical Training form (form #I-8) will need to be approved by your Academic Advisor and submitted to the Assistant Director of International Services, who will give final authorization, prior to the start of your employment. Please make sure that you do not begin working without proper authorization as you would be working illegally. We recommend that you obtain CPT permission at least one (1) week prior to the start of your employment.

F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT)

F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows you to work off-campus full-time for up to 12 months after you graduate from CGU.  Please refer to the F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) handout for additional information and eligibility requirements.  You will need to apply for OPT through USCIS with help from the Assistant Director of International Services.  Please refer to the F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) checklist handout for an application guide. Additionally, please visit the Important Information Regarding OPT page for important information and policies regarding OPT, the H1-B gap provision, and 17-Month STEM Extension.

J-1 Academic Training

J-1 Academic Training allows international student/scholars to work off-campus while studying at CGU or after they graduate CGU.  Please refer to the J-1 Academic Training handout for information on Academic Training. To obtain authorization, the J-1 Academic Training form (form I-11) will need to be approved by your Academic Advisor, and submitted to the Assistant Director of International Services, who will give final authorization, prior to the start of your employment. Please make sure that you do not begin working without proper authorization as you would be working illegally. We recommend that you obtain CPT permission at least one (1) week prior to the start of your employment.

H-1 B Work Visa

Some students may wish to transition to an H1B work visa after completion of their program and/or optional practical training (or academic training) period. These students should review the F-1 OPT and H1B GAP Timelines found on the Handouts and Forms webpage and attend the Working in the United States workshops sponsored by CGU and International Place.
