Cultural Studies situates culture as a terrain of political and economic struggle. We emphasize the ideological dimension of cultural practices, as well as their radical political potential in subverting the mechanisms of power and money that colonize the life-world.

At CGU faculty work actively in a range of areas, including feminist and queer studies, film and media studies, post-colonial studies, psychoanalysis, science studies, as well as the Frankfurt and Birmingham Schools.

Continuing Students
 

We are especially concerned to link cultural theory to cultural practices
and activist politics. Students are encouraged to enroll in a field studies
seminar that promotes participation in and analysis of the local community's cultural practices.

The department offers stand-alone Masters and Ph.D.s in Cultural Studies, as well as a concentration in media studies, a concentration in museum studies, and a graduate certificate in Africana studies.

(In addition to the personal statement, a writing sample is required when applying to Cultural Studies. The sample should have a maximum length of 30 pages.)
