About The Institute for Signifying Scriptures

ISS fosters comparative collaborative multi-disciplinary research into the phenomena—rituals, practices, performances, material objects, visual representations, scripts, sounds, ideologies, power dynamics—found around the world but generally referred to in the freighted English shorthand as “scriptures.” The aim is to understand the text-ure-s of social formation, as they are woven around, beyond, and sometimes against texts.
