Telle Whitney to be speaker at CGU's 2012 commencement ceremony

Telle Whitney, president and CEO of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology, will be the featured speaker at Claremont Graduate University's 85th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12.

Whitney exemplifies CGU's commitment to prepare more women to enter technology fields. Named by Fast Company magazine as one of the Most Influential Women in Technology, she has been a leader in broadening the participation of women in the growing digital economy and in increasing the positive impact of technology on the world's women.

Whitney has 20 years experience in the semiconductor and telecommunications industries. She has held senior technical management positions with Malleable Technologies (now PMC-Sierra) and Actel Corporation, and is a co-founder of the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference. She is a co-founder of the National Center for Women and Information Technology. She serves on the advisory boards of Caltech’s Information Science and Technology, California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Illuminate Ventures.

CGU's commencement ceremony will feature the conferral of degrees, the awarding of honorary degrees, greetings by university officials, and the commencement address. Tickets are not required. Receptions will be held afterward at each of CGU's nine schools.

On Friday, May 11, CGU's School of Information Systems and Technology will host a pre-commencement forum focusing on the transformative change technology has had on our day-to-day lives. The forum will feature a discussion between Whitney; Armen Orujyan, co-chairman of the United Nations' Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development; and Janet Ferrell Brodie, dean of CGU's School of Arts and Humanites. Tom Horan, dean of CGU's School of Information Systems and Technology, will moderate.
