On September 19, 2006, Thai Army officers took over the country in a bloodless coup, ousting Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Many foreign leaders state that this is certainly a step back for democracy in Thailand. SPE Professor Arthur Denzau addressed this question and gave background on the Thai political context including the royal institution of the Thai monarchy and previous coups. He then discusses the problems that lead directly to the present coup. The panel also benefited from the perspective of Thai PhD student and panelist Sirathorn Dechsakulthorn who fielded questions on the Thai political system.
