A Degree in Information Systems and Technology:
Valuable and Relevant Training for Tomorrow's Leaders

The School of Information Systems and Technology prepares students for careers as systems analysts and database administrators, computer and information systems managers, computer software engineers, and systems administrators, all of which are among the fastest growing occupations through 2012 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook for 2004-2005.

The downturn in the information technology job market is a temporary phenomenon. A July 2004 article in the Los Angeles Times talked about the lack of interest by students in majoring in IT fields, but notes that there has been a surge in job growth in information technology, including IBM and HP creating nearly 10,000 new jobs this year. Moreover, off-shore outsourcing, a hot item in the news these days actually provides more opportunities than disincentives for choosing a career in IT. With outsourcing activities come new demands for social and technological solutions to service-oriented architectures (SOAs).

According to John Seely Brown, emeritus Chief Scientist at Xerox and CGU honorary doctor of humane letters, today’s organizations must develop rigorous and effective methods for working together if they expect to benefit from phenomena such as off-shore outsourcing. Designing effective SOAs requires knowledge that is gained in the Information Systems and Technology curriculum, which emphasizes a mixture of technical and managerial education.

Our Board of Visitors members validate our approach saying that the transdisciplinary nature of our degree programs makes our graduates highly prized by information technology managers. These individuals will be on track to be tomorrow’s IS leaders.
