 In 'N Out - in both Montclair/Upland and La Verne on Foothill - $3-$10 range. Vegetarian friendly Menu online "...a California classic burger and fries drive-thru experience with a secret menu (found online) that offers some tasty vegetarian options." (Tip: You can exegete the Bible verses on the bottom of the cups and fries wrappers while you eat to make it an academic experience!)...from student recommendations  
NB for the health-conscious: In 'N Out hamburgers are made from fresh, 100% pure beef. They are free of additives, fillers and preservatives of any kind, and they buy only chucks, the front ribs and shoulder. No other parts are ever used. Their butchers carefully hand-cut and grind the beef, then the the patties are shipped directly to stores in refrigerated trucks by company drivers...In addition, the lettuce is hand-leafed. American cheese is the real thing. They use the plumpest, juiciest tomatoes they can find, and all of their ingredients are delivered fresh. They don’t even own a microwave, heat lamp, or freezer. They even bake their buns using old-fashioned, slow-rising sponge dough. Every burger is made one at a time, cooked fresh to order... adapted from website

Bombay Bistro: 8851 Central Ave, Suite E-F Montclair CA ~ 909.445.1455 Vegetarian friendly "...really good Indian food and can be ordered mild to actually spicy; good lunch buffet and dinners in the $10-$20 range."  Famous for its Tandoori skillets which are served on a hot skillet with sautéed onions and peppers Bistro platters served with house salad or soup and your choice of rice or plain naan bread. Joey's Bar-B-Q: 1964 W. Foothill, Upland, just east of Central ~ 909.982-2128 ($8-$35 range) Menu online "Texas-style white folks' place. The sauce is on the sweet side, and they've got their own idea about what counts as brisket, but it's ok stuff..." from a student recommendation

Rico Coffee: 2320-A Foothill Blvd., La Verne, CA 91750 ~ 909.392.1999 (next to Von's on Foothill & White) "less expensive and better quality coffee and tea than many of the chains. It’s a locally-owned family business, a great place to study, and has open mike nights as well as live music on many nights..." from a student recommendation

Veggie & Tea House: 641 Arrow Hwy, San Dimas 91773 ~ 909.592.6323 ($6-$10 range) Vegan & Vegetarian friendly Menu online  "Instead of a menu, they display their dishes in a showcase, along with the nutritional information. Their food is elegant yet inexpensive, they offer those ever-trendy coffee drinks with the little tapioca balls at the bottom, and their food comes arranged on a dragonboat! (Tip: You can keep the cool wooden boxes the rice comes in!)..." from a student recommendation

Veggie Era (formerly known as Veggie Panda Wok): 903 W. Foothill, Upland, CA  91786 ~ 909.982.3882  $5-$10 range Vegan & Vegetarian friendly "...serves an enticing all-vegan Chinese food menu. The lunch menu prices are unbeatable, and the friendly family-owned restaurant even offers conscientious reading material about Buddhism and veganism while you wait for your food."

Zuby’s Cafe: 3131 North Garey Ave., Pomona, CA  91767 ~ 909.596.6666, offers "...some of the best-tasting, least-expensive pizza in the area."

In Hollywood        
Canter's Deli in Hollywood (on Fairfax) is a good late-night place, and Urth (locations in West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica) is a nice organic coffee hang-out, if you can handle the attitude.
