THE SCHOOL OF POLITICS & ECONOMICS
ANNOUNCEMENT
dean search for The School of Politics & Economics
The faculty of the School of Politics and Economics seeks a Dean of the School. The field of scholarship is open. Deans at CGU may also be members of the faculty and may be considered for tenure. We are searching for a person who can provide academic leadership with strong fund raising capability, and demonstrated ability to promote diversity and work productively with students, professors, and external partners in a transdisciplinary setting. We are looking for an entrepreneurial individual, who will work with us in moving the School to greater excellence in research and teaching.
The School of Politics and Economics includes the Department of Politics and Policy and the Department of Economics at Claremont Graduate University. We believe the School’s name declares its greatest competitive advantage. Most contemporary problems are complex, and solving them often requires that one cross the traditional academic boundaries. In order to do this, we have built an integrated political economy program, drawing upon the strengths of the two disciplines, yet we recognize the importance of providing solid training within the traditional fields of economics and political science. SPE offers MAs and PhDs in economics and politics, an interfield PhD in politics and economics, and several professional masters programs that integrate economics, politics, management, and tools for analytical decision making and predictive modeling.
The economics program has an applied focus with particular emphasis on international economics and finance. We have one of the few programs in the country in the exciting new area of neuroeconomics. We also have strength in international trade and development, public choice and public economics, industrial organization, and new institutional economics as subsets of applied microeconomics and financial economics. The links between finance and political economy are emphasized. We have been in the forefront of analyzing global financial crises and applications of behavioral finance to the international arena.
Within political science we offer five main fields of study: American politics, comparative politics, political philosophy, public policy and world politics. The political economy focus is a major element within the world politics and comparative politics tracks, as well as within public policy and incorporates pioneering work in predictive politics. One of the more innovative features of our program lies in the interconnection between political philosophy and American politics, which has made SPE a particularly good place to study the foundations of American democracy, as well as national institutions. Questions related to democratic governance in the twenty-first century have led our faculty to develop strengths in the politics of race and ethnicity, women and politics and religion and politics.
Claremont Graduate University is America’s only private, graduate-only, research-extensive university. Nestled at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, CGU is one of seven members of the unique Claremont Colleges Consortium. CGU is known for intimate, trans-disciplinary teaching and research that takes on major challenges facing our region and world.
Claremont Graduate University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, place of national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation, or physical handicap in its employment practices and in admission of students to educational programs and activities in accordance with the requirement of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and to he applicable laws. Claremont Graduate University is committed to affirmative action in employment practices regarding ethnic minorities, the physically handicapped, Vietnam-era veterans, and women.
We will begin reviewing applications from April 15, 2008, and will continue until the position is filled. Please send a letter of application and a current curriculum vita to:
