CGU Summer 2008 Workshops in Research Languages
The CGU Writing Center offers language workshops during the summer months to help students complete their research tool requirements in foreign languages. These workshops are 0 unit classes that meet each morning or afternoon during half of the summer (summer semester Module I or Module II). Normally, workshops in French, German, and Spanish are offered. No previous experience in these languages is required, though it certainly would be useful. The workshops focus on reading comprehension, rather than speaking or writing, in order to enable the graduate student to use foreign language texts in his or her research. At the end of the workshop, it is expected that the student will be able to translate (using only a bilingual dictionary) and comprehend any text that is relevant to his or her field of research. The successful passing of the final exam fulfills the CGU research tool requirement for that language.
For Summer 2008, the cost for one of the 5-days per week, 7-week workshops is $1400.
Lang 171 Spanish for Reading Knowledge Clara Soto Ivey
The first weeks consist of the study of grammar, in-class review and exercises, and an introduction to translation. By the third week the student begins translating. The second half of the course includes translating increasingly difficult tests, advanced grammar, and readings from the student’s individual field.
Offered during Summer Module II (July 14-August 29) from 2-5 pm MTuWThF.
Lang 181 French for Reading Knowledge Marie-Denise Shelton

1) French Grammar – The Key to Reading by Colette Brichant
2) French for the Humanities by Colette Brichant
