Charles L. Gruder, Ph.D.

After receiving his doctorate in social psychology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Larry Gruder joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he became Professor and Chair. In 1990, he was appointed Executive Director of the Special Research Programs at the University of California, Office of the President (systemwide headquarters). The three Special Research Programs award research grants on breast cancer, HIV/AIDS, and tobacco-related disease to investigators at California research institutions. Together they award approximately $35 million annually for 150 new multi-year grants and monitor approximately 450 active grants in a wide range of disciplines, including public health, public policy, epidemiology, behavioral science, clinical science, and basic biomedical science (e.g., cellular and molecular biology, immunology, pathology, virology).

Larry has extensive peer review experience, having served as a member and chair of NIH peer review panels, as a peer reviewer for NSF, and as member and chair of the Research Funding Allocation and Advisory Panel for ClearWay Minnesota. He has also done extensive peer review for scientific journals, including a term as Associate Editor of the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. He has advised and consulted for numerous public and private non-profit voluntary health organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

While on the faculty prior to his university executive position, Larry was principal investigator and co-principal investigator of NIH research grants on smoking cessation. Most of this research was collaborative and multidisciplinary. His earlier work in experimental social psychology addressed attitude and behavior change, social comparison processes, and altruistic behavior.
