Welcome from the Director

Threats to health and wellbeing are complex and far reaching. They include, escalating health disparities between rich and poor, climate and environmental change, and emerging and infectious disease. In addition, unprecedented global social and economic change and a steep increase in chronic non-communicable illness contributes to the pandemic of diseases of lifestyle. Cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and certain cancers share similar risk factors related to unhealthy diets, sedentary behavior, substance use, risky sexual behaviors, and mental stress.
Addressing such conditions requires public health practitioners and researchers who possess the knowledge, skills, and vision to mobilize, coordinate, and direct broad collaborative actions within and across complex health systems, institutions, and communities. Graduates of the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) will master the skills to design, measure, and assess solutions to improve the health of environmental, social, and individual needs. Importantly, this program builds upon the strong tradition of academic excellence, strategic leadership and innovative collaboration across disciplines, the hallmark of CGU.
At CGU, we believe that overcoming barriers to good health result through the interaction of science and community action. Evidence-based health promotion and disease prevention strategies that combine the best science, translate well to practical application, and involve the input and buy in of community members are essential to favorable health outcomes, harmonious lives, productivity, and peace of mind.
Program faculty comprise world leaders in global public health research and practice. They collectively bring a robust record of National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other funding, a wealth of scientific and administrative expertise, numerous successful ongoing funded research centers and projects, hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, and decades of experience in graduate training program development and operation. Their research and service focus on the needs of our Southern California communities and communities throughout the Pacific Rim, South Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
If you have a desire to make a difference on a global scale, we invite you to join us!
