A Message from Scott Thomas, Dean

Thank you for your interest in the School of Education Studies at Claremont Graduate University. The SES is recognized nationally as a leader in training scholars and practitioners interested in issues related to social justice and accountability in education. Our graduates work as professors at universities across the country; as teachers, counselors, principals, and superintendents in public school systems and private schools; in state and federal government positions as elected officials, legislative staffers, and research analysts; as researchers in think-tanks and policy groups; and as educational entrepreneurs. Our wide network of graduates spans virtually every sector of the educational enterprise. A common bond among our exceptionally well-trained alumni is their commitment to addressing issues of equity of educational opportunity.

The SES enjoys national distinction on many dimensions. First, we customize each student’s academic program to maximize the alignment between student interests and our faculty’s expertise. Second, our programs are transdisciplinary by design, drawing substantive expertise and knowledge from across the university, and we approach education as a truly continuous process removing the artificial division that exists in many programs between K-12 and post-secondary education. Third, though small in size, relative to typical schools of education, our faculty is among the most diverse and internationally distinguished group of scholars in the country. Fourth, we deeply value the rich experience and critical perspectives that our students bring to the classroom and our research.

Please do come and visit with us soon. See for yourself what the School of Educational Studies at CGU has to offer.

Sincerely,

Scott L. Thomas
Dean and Professor of Educational Studies
