In his lecture, It's the Learning, Stupid, Jamie Merisotis, President of Lumina Foundation for Education, addressed the important reasons why the national debate over college completion--as embodied by the Foundation’s (and President Obama’s) goal of increasing the nation’s level of high quality degrees and credentials to 60%--represents a watershed moment for higher education in the United States.
Carlos Garcia, Superintendent of San Francisco Unified School District, delivered the 13th Casanova Distinguished Alumni Lecture. In his lecture, Civil Rights and the Achievement Gap: Strategic Planning for Social Justice, Mr. Garcia spoke about San Francisco Unified School District’s strategic plan that dares to diminish the predictive power of demographics and to make social justice a reality by igniting a civil rights movement in every school across the city.

Dr. Juliet V. Garcia, the President of the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) and Texas Southmost College (TSC), addressed the CGU community at the 25th Annual Bowen Lecture. In her lecture, Stewardship: The Privileges & the Responsibilities, Dr. Garcia discussed issues such as making controversial decisions in the public arena, taking a stand on positions that benefit the greater good, and confronting the cross-current issues of immigration and patriotism in a diverse border area.
