The Certificate in Africana Studies
Background
The purpose of the Africana Studies Graduate Certificate Program is to foster the acquisition of knowledge about Africa and the African Diaspora: their cultures, their histories, and their politics.
The Certificate Program is a joint endeavor between the Claremont Graduate University and the Intercollegiate Department of Black Studies (IDBS) of The Claremont Colleges.
Requirements
Students enrolled in any degree program at CGU are eligible to obtain an Africana Studies Certificate. The requirements are the completion of five courses relevant to Africa and the Diaspora with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in each course. The five courses must include at least one theory course, one research methods course, and one course that has significant gender content. One of the required CORE course will be offered at CGU each year. The other courses may be selected with the approval of the Director of the Program. The selections should be relevant to the African Diaspora and/or Africa; they should include courses with substantive breadth and coherence. Courses may be selected from curricular offerings from the Intercollegiate Department of Black Studies of the Claremont Colleges as well as from faculty at CGU. Courses taught at the undergraduate Claremont Colleges will be offered at the graduate level, in consultation with the professor teaching the course. All five courses may count as credit for the M.A. or Ph.D. for which the student is enrolled, provided that the courses are approved for that purpose by the student’s M.A. or Ph.D. advisor.
