It is difficult to believe that Father Eleutherius Winance has reached the 100th year of a life journey that has reached and continues to touch so many lives, across so many walks of life. Claremont has been a ground for the crossing of many paths, and we are grateful to Father Winance who has made our campus and our community fertile and rich with his friendship, his warmth, and his wisdom. Father Winance has an unquenchable thirst for understanding and the fellowship of like and unlike travelers. He taught at Claremont for 39 years (1963-2002) and earned the respect and love of his students and colleagues.

On Tuesday, May 26th 2009 many friends gathered to celebrate Fr. Winance’s 100th year upon this earth. Brothers Issac and Damien, and Father Dominic accompanied Father Winance from Valyermo. Guests who were able to join us included: alumni Eric Ditwiler, Dr. Robert Doud and his wife Dr. Jacqueline Powers Doud, Dr. Robert Pielke, Mike La Caze, Dr. William Havlicek, and Dr. Judy Miles Faculty; Dr. Darcy Otto and his wife Jasmin (bearing a message from Alumnus Dr. David Hitchcock); friends Delores Abdella, Betty Hagelbarger, and Provost Yi Feng; Claremont faculty members John Vickers, Charles Young, Patricia Easton, Steven Davis, and Patrick Horn; and student Will Mittendorf. We joined together in the Harper Courtyard on a beautiful afternoon to meet, share lunch, conversation and birthday cake. We shared stories and memories, and paid tribute to the many wonderful gifts that Father Winance has brought us over the years. One of the highlights was Fr. Winance sharing his life recollections with us, including how he first learned some Chinese en route to China reading "Le Petit Chat" children's story in chinese!

Please browse our website to enjoy the photos from May 26th, go to photo gallery, as well as old and new one’s taken by our alumni at Valyermo. “Celebrating 100 years” is a collection of rembrances dedicated to Father Winance, which is available through the web publishing company, www.lulu.com.

We  hope the website version of the tribute will be a living testimony of our love and friendship for Father Winance. Go to Alumni Guestbook
