Biography

John W. Bachmann is a senior partner of Edward Jones and chairman of the Board of Visitors of the Drucker School and trustee of Claremont Graduate University. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Wabash College and an MBA in finance from Northwestern University.

Bachmann began his career at Edward Jones as a part-time college intern in 1959, for the next two decades worked his way up the ranks of the company, gaining experience in strategic planning, corporate finance and technology. By 1980, Bachmann succeeded Edward D. Jones, Jr. as managing partner of Edward Jones. Bachmann built upon Mr. Jones’ philosophy of serving the needs of individual investors, and during his tenure as managing partner, Edward Jones grew from 200 offices in 28 states to more than 9,000 offices throughout the United States, in addition to its affiliates in Canada and the United Kingdom. In December 2003, Bachmann stepped down as managing partner of Edward Jones to become a senior partner.

In 1973, Bachmann introduced the writings of Peter Drucker to the senior management of Edward Jones.  Upon becoming the managing partner of the firm, he began a working relationship with Peter that continued for the last 26 years of Peter's life … during which time Edward Jones grew from a small regional firm to the fifth largest retail securities firm in America.  It was described by Harvard Professor Michael Porter as the most profitable financial institution over that period based upon return on equity.  It was also twice named the Best Company to Work For by Fortune magazine and received numerous honors from consumer groups.
