AUGUST 4.2009

Starting in September of 2009, the Drucker School of Management will offer a new Executive Master of Arts in Arts Management program geared towards mid-to-senior level executives in the nonprofit and philanthropic arts sectors.

Students will have the rare opportunity to bring their real-world experiences and diverse backgrounds in arts and culture to their course of study, with the ultimate goal of unlocking their full potential as leaders and managers.

A joint effort between the School of Arts and Humanities and the Executive Management Program at the Drucker School, the new program is the first of its kind in the United States. It is comprised of 48 units that can be completed in two years of full-time study or on a part-time basis in a maximum of five years. All courses are held in the late afternoon, early evening, or Saturday mornings in either downtown Los Angeles or Claremont.

“This is a new and exciting collaboration,” said Ira Jackson, Dean of The Drucker School of Management. “To combine the creative pulse of the arts with our ethical and management focus will help produce future arts leaders who will be able to forge innovative paths for today’s art organizations.”

Admission into the program requires at least five years of mid-to senior-level management experience; however the GMAT or GRE are not required. Fellowships are available. CGU also offers an MA in Arts Management program. For more information, please visit

New MBA/MPH DualDegree

VIDEO MAGAZINE

The Drucker School’s new dual MBA/MPH degree program will develop leaders with world-class knowledge in global health leadership and management principles and population-based disease prevention and control.

The program will join the expertise and strengths of CGU’s Drucker School of Management with its new School of Community and Global Health. It is the first installment of an envisioned Health Systems Leadership Program aimed to integrate scientific knowledge with executive leadership skills through specially tailored programs for individuals who want a management career in the health industry.

“Health care is the largest single sector of our economy and requires much more effective management and leadership at all levels — from prevention programs to hospital treatment,” said Ira Jackson, Dean of the Drucker School. “The next frontier in public health is in prevention and changing behaviors, not just treating symptoms or tracking diseases. This program offers the best of both worlds.”

Previously, students who wished to obtain both degrees — a MBA and MA in Public Health — had to earn them sequentially, a process that could take a total of four years. The arrangement of the new program allows students to complete both masters in less than three years. For the full overview of the MBA/MPH program, visit www.cgu.edu/drucker.

DRUCKER APPS

In this edition of Drucker Apps, you’ll find tools to help you understand why managing upward is crucial to your own success, the importance of adjusting to your boss's working style, the surprising power of subordinates in knowledge-driven organizations and what critical questions you should be asking those in charge. These insights—at once timely and timeless—are based on the ideas and ideals of the late Peter F. Drucker, the father of modern management.

Course Recap
Shared Leadership: Extreme Edition

In June a group of 32 Drucker students got together at Big Bear Lake for a unique new course entitled "Shared Leadership: Extreme Edition" taught by Craig Pearce and Charles Manz. Surpassing all expectations, the course was not your ordinary classroom experience. In a series of unique activities, from observing a jazz band to assembling a bicycle, students gained a cutting edge perspective on what it takes to lead effectively in the era of knowledge work.

The Drucker School’s own Professor Kees de Kluyver organized a small jazz group of like-skilled people who had not played together before to demonstrate to the students the various types of communication in a group, their leadership roles and the importance of being highly skilled for the performance of the entire group. In another exercise, the students were asked to ‘buy’ their individual and team values in a Values Auction; they learned about perception and trust while trying to dance the tango, and used the readings and lectures from the class to communicate with each other more effectively in small groups.

The students were not only able to apply what they’ve learned right away, but also were making plans for how they could use this knowledge in their office team meetings, at corporate retreats, or how to handle interactions better with their own teams. Outside the class, there were also a lot of activities that students could take advantage of, including an afternoon horseback ride through the pine forests of Big Bear.
