The Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University will recognize some of its strongest MBA applicants this fall by welcoming them to beautiful Claremont, California to celebrate Drucker Day 2009.

MBA applicants who submit their applications by the November 1st early application deadline will have a chance to be selected for a weekend-long trip to Southern California and participate in the biggest management event of the year and the highlight of the Drucker Centennial celebrations – Drucker Day – on November 7, 2009. The selected MBA applicants will also be invited to a Drucker School community gathering with special guest Doris Drucker, physicist, inventor, and wife of famed management scholar and social philosopher Peter Drucker, at an outdoor Sunday Brunch on November 8.

This opportunity is open to applicants to the full-time MBA program who demonstrate excellence in their academic achievement. To be considered for selection to attend Drucker Day, applicants must submit a completed application by November 1, 2009.* Round-trip travel costs, hotel stay and meals during the visit will be covered by the School.

MBA Program applicants who apply before the November 1st deadline will also receive special consideration for the unique Drucker Centennial Fellowship. The Drucker Centennial Fellowship is awarded as part of the year-long Drucker Centennial celebration in commemoration of Peter Drucker’s impact on management thinking. The Fellowship is awarded to applicants with exceptional academic backgrounds and who demonstrate the potential to pursue a successful career in a leadership role. Drucker Centennial Fellows receive a scholarship of up to 50% of tuition costs to be applied to up to 16 units per semester. Fellows contribute their time and talents to a variety of strategic and project-related assignments and culminate each semester with a special event with the Dean, faculty, and senior administrators.

The Drucker Centennial marks the 100th birthday of Peter F. Drucker – the father of modern management, author of 39 books on organizational behavior, innovation, economy, and society, and a winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Centennial is a time of commemoration and celebration of Peter Drucker’s work and legacy and reflects the efforts of the Drucker School and Drucker Institute to ensure that his teachings on effective management, ethical leadership and social responsibility endure into the next century.

Finding a Competitive Edge with Career Management

How to find a job in this tough job market? How to connect with employers and peers from my field? How to realistically evaluate my goals and skills? How to apply my knowledge from school to the real world? How to create and manage a successful career path, and remain competitive throughout it? How, how, how… ?

In spite of the enormous amount of career resources that can be found nowadays – online, in self-help books or from friends, these questions still remain unanswered for most young business professionals and established managers looking for a career change. The problem is that all these resources lack a personalized touch combined with expertise, understanding and flexibility.

This is why the Career Management Office at the Drucker School offers consulting beyond resume workshops or job fairs. The career consultants at Drucker help students focus their job and career search, including targeting appropriate employers, implementing specific job search strategies, and building skills in self-marketing.

Among the services that Drucker Career Management provides are personalized career planning, skills development, networking, job search resources and an alumni mentoring program. The center also offers services to international students, helping them solve immigration issues and find opportunities that best suit their needs and values. Some of the most popular and interesting activities at the Career Management Office are the Peer groups and the Virtual Career fair.

Through the Career Management Peer Groups students meet with Drucker career advising staff in groups according to their anticipated work field – Consulting, Marketing, Finance and an Open Forum – five times throughout the Fall semester. These discussion groups allow students to learn from each other’s experiences and gain insights about the career seeking process. Group sessions focus on finding the right job after Drucker, the best ways to find the best opportunities, how to land the interview, perfecting interview skills and getting paid fair market value.

The Virtual Career Fair, powered by Alumwire.com, allows students to interact with employers via live chat. Students can ask questions about available positions and upload resumes, and employers can get to know applicants virtually, saving time by recruiting online. Participating companies at the next Virtual Career Fair at Drucker include Micros Systems, CDW Corporation, Comcast Interactive Media, Sirius XM Radio, Xcel Energy, Ecolab and others.

DRUCKER APPS

When President Obama went to Wall Street recently, a year after the demise of Lehman Brothers, he urged those in the financial community to begin “learning the lessons of Lehman and the crisis from which we’re still recovering.” Peter Drucker, it’s clear, would have agreed that this is a perfect teaching moment. In this edition of Drucker Apps, you’ll find tools to help you understand the perils of short-term thinking, the virtues of promoting regulation, the need for leaders to anticipate crisis, and the importance of encouraging honest communication from the bottom up. These insights—at once timely and timeless—are based on the ideas and ideals of the late Peter F. Drucker, the father of modern management.
