Other GLI Activities

The Claremont Graduate University (CGU) is pleased to announce that the Getty Leadership Institute (GLI) has a new Executive Director, Melody Kanschat.  (Click here to read the full press release.)  We encourage you to e-mail Melody at gli@cgu.edu to share your thoughts about future GLI programs.

Beyond direct delivery of continuing professional development for current and future museum leaders, GLI at CGU's other activities include assisting those initiating leadership programs of their own, collaborating with other organizations in service to the museum field, and convening museum professionals, board members, academics, philanthropists, and public officials to pose, question and sometimes reframe issues of significance affecting cultural organizations.

Collaborations

“I have been involved in the planning of at least four GLI-organized programs for AAMD members on subjects ranging from Strategic Planning, to Financial Management, to Governance, to Human Resources. These workshops have been invaluable. GLI understands our specific needs: leadership of non-profit organizations with art objects as a raison d'etre. No other group could have helped us address the challenges of leading art museums of this country as well as the Getty Leadership Institute has over these last few years.”
(Michael Conforti, President AAMD, January 2009)
At strategically opportune times for mutual benefit, the GLI at CGU has collaborated with other key organizations serving the field. Examples of such organizations include:

Technical Assistance

In service to the museum field, the GLI at CGU offers technical assistance to others interested in designing and developing leadership programs of their own for a particular sector. For example, assistance has been provided to:

  • Instituto de Liderazgo en Museos (ILM), Mexico: GLI at CGU was instrumental in the creation of ILM, and continues to have a strong voice within ILM to design and deliver its programs for museum leaders in Mexico, including the Programa en Alta Dirección de Museos (PADEM) program.
  • Association of Academic Museums and Galleries (AAMG): GLI at CGU advised on design and curriculum issues for their leadership program specifically for academic museum staff.
  • Noyce Foundation: GLI at CGU was consulted regarding the creation of the Noyce Leadership Institute, a program for executives in science centers, children’s museums, and related institutions.
  • Clore Duffield Foundation: GLI at CGU provided guidance for the creation of the Clore Leadership Programme, and subsequently delivered a session for its alums.
  • Gordon Darling Foundation: GLI at CGU was consulted regarding the design and creation of the Museum Leadership Program.

Convenings

Occasionally, GLI convenes museum professionals, board members, academics, philanthropists, and public officials to pose, question, and sometimes reframe issues of significance affecting cultural organizations. Examples of past convenings include:
  • Managing the Creative - Engaging New Audiences. In 2004, leaders from the nonprofit arts and the for-profit creative sectors gathered to discuss the similarities, differences, and potential intersections between the sectors in relation to effective management of creative processes. View the convening materials and blog activity on our Compleat Leader.
  • Cultural Organizations and Changing Leisure Trends. In 2007, leaders from arts, culture, media, academia, and the creative for-profit sector across the country engaged one another in a series of conversations about the changing ways in which Americans spend their time. The group explored the facts, and considered strategies cultural organizations might use to take advantage of these new leisure trends or to reposition themselves over and against them.  View the convening materials and blog activity on our Compleat Leader.
