After winning first place in the 2009 Leeds Net Impact Sustainable Business Case Competition, Drucker School students couldn't wait to go back for more! In late November the team of four students who competed the first round - Julia Baumgaertner, MAAM 2011; Jay Hinton, MBA 2011; Joshua Schare, MBA 2010; and Sarah Dale Schwald, MBA 2010 (the last three are 2009 Leeds Competition Winner) - was selected to advance to the next round. The contest is hosted by the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business in Boulder, Colorado.
In the first round of the competition the teams were sent a case. Their task was to, within 10 days, develop a comprehensive solution to a complex problem in less than 750 words on 10-slide presentation deck. No outside help was allowed, and all rounds of the competition were blind. This year's charge was to raise the amount of sustainable agriculture produced in the United States, and encourage increased investment in sustainable agriculture.
In February the team will travel to Boulder where they will be given a new case (with only some prior information) and 12 hours to prepare a solution before presentations begin.
"Participating last year was such an amazing experience," said Sarah Dale Schwald, a second-time participant in the competition. "Working with an amazing team pushed me to learn more, and then getting to interact with students from other schools who are as committed to responsible business as we are here at Drucker was inspiring. Sustainability is for everyone, and it is important to come together to explore solutions to real problems." Schwald is also the leader of the Drucker School's Net Impact chapter.
The other competition where Drucker students will be able to show their knowledge about sustainable business strategies and solution is the Walmart Sustainable Living Business Plan Competition. The Finals at the Drucker School will take place on January 29, and the winning team will compete at the Southwest Regional competition on February 12. Its competitors will be Arizona State University Monterey Institute of International Studies, UC Irvine, University of Arizona, and University of Texas, Austin. Drucker Centennial Global Entrepreneur in Residence - Prof. Warner Woodworth
|
|
 |
Claremont Graduate University honored Warner P. Woodworth, professor of organizational leadership and strategy at Brigham Young University, as the first Peter F. Drucker Centennial Global Entrepreneur in Residence.
The Drucker School awarded Woodworth the honorary teaching position as part of its year-long, centennial celebration of the late management guru, Peter F. Drucker. Drucker rose to prominence for his insights into the world of big business, while still promoting the social sector. Woodworth was selected for his embodiment of those same ideals.
"We were blown away by his passion, his authenticity, his range and depth of understanding, and his leadership," says Ira Jackson, Drucker School dean. "He is a leader of innovation, and he has so much potential to address the daunting issues that are facing our society."
As a distinguished fellow, Woodworth will teach an intensive one-month course this spring and will advise Claremont faculty on ways to design courses in new areas of management such as social entrepreneurship. Woodworth says he hopes to be able to help MBA students in the Drucker School confront local problems using pro bono consulting and social enterprise tools.
"It's exciting for me to build on Drucker's legacy," Woodworth says, "especially since so much of his work was focused on nonprofit management. It's an honor to have his name attached to the privilege of teaching at the Drucker School."

Course Highlight: Marketing Strategy with Prof. Jenny Darroch
|
|
 |
This Spring Professor Jenny Darroch is teaching Marketing Strategy - a capstone course for students taking marketing as a concentration and a course that speaks to the heart of what we do at the Drucker School - bridging academic rigor with practical relevance.
"Running this course is a real highlight for me because of the growth I see in my students as they put theory to practice," says Professor Darroch. "Students often comment that this is one course from which they gain the most during their time at the Drucker School because they work with real clients on real problems."
We have an exciting range of projects lined up covering multiple sectors and addressing a range of marketing problems. This year, our clients include Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary, Red Gate Software, which is located in the Cambridge Technology Park in the UK, Dream Dance - a group that performs traditional Chinese dance and modern interpretations of the same, the Claremont Unified School District, Molecular Targets - a start-up company based at UC Irvine, AARP's Driver Safety Program, Onda Board Skateboards - another start-up company, Michael Ferrera's custom clothing company, and CGU's own School of Information Systems and Technology who have developed an open source communications product for children with autism.
In the Marketing Strategy course teams of three students are assigned to a client organization and are required to manage the client relationship and ultimately produce a marketing plan to address the marketing problem of interest. In addition, Professor Darroch also arranges a number of high profile guest speakers to address the marketing strategy class. So far, she has confirmed Bettina Sherick, who is the Vice President of International Digital Marketing at 20th Century Fox International and Carsten Tiejtsen, Director of International Marketing, Brand & Corporate Strategy at Sun Maid. Both guest speakers are Drucker alumni.
