Biography
Monica is a Ph.D. candidate with an emphasis on Education Policy, Evaluation, and Reform. Monica’s research pertains to policy and reform strategies that lead to access and equity in higher education for underserved student populations. More specifically, her work focuses on examinig the barriers of college planning and advisement in secondary education, the impact of the common core standards on disadvantaged student populations, and the effects of charter school policy on the governance and academic outcomes of public charter school students in urban communities. Monica's dissertation examines the college going culture and organizational behaviors of predominantly African American charter high schools in the District of Columbia.
Monica has served in various research and student leadership positions on campus. She served as a research fellow on a grant-sponsored school-centered community revitalization project in North Long Beach, coordinated through the School of Educational Studies (SES); a Howard R. Bowen Associate, a higher education student leadership entity in SES; and as the SES External Affairs Assistant, serving as a liaison to prospective students and the SES community.
