Jameelah Xochitl Medina

Jameelah's research interests include social and cultural capital of American Muslim women, cultural ecology and achievement motivations of high achieving African American students, and identity formation of Afro-Latino/a students.

 

Jameelah Xochitl Medina is a published author with over 15 years of teaching experience, nine years of workers’ compensation and corporate training experience, and numerous years as a community activist and educational advocate.

Jameelah works as an administrator providing services to The Claremont Colleges. She is also employed part-time as: 1) a lecturer and motivational speaker, 2) an instructor for the University of Phoenix online, and 3) as the master teacher of her weekend academy in Rialto, California. Post-graduation, she plans to be a researcher /practitioner at an institution of higher education and continue to speak across the country and internationally.

Jameelah earned her B.A. in Spanish (cum laude) from Claremont McKenna College and her M.Ed. from Claremont Graduate University. She also studied at the University of Barcelona, Spain and in Panama. Her research interests include: 1) social and cultural capital, hybrid identities, the politics of “passing,” Islamophobia and “faith-blind bigotry” as they concern head-covering U.S. American Muslim women in higher education; 2) cultural ecology and achievement motivations of high-achieving African American students; 3) hybrid identities and identity formation of Afro-Latino students; 4) how intimate partner violence affects the educational performance of female college students; and 5) the use of counter-hegemonic narratives as pedagogy, empowerment, and tools for social justice.
