Recap of Spring 2013:
Spring semester headed off with a Community Empowerment panel in which we invited representatives from several community organizations to incite a discussion on what we as Public Health professionals could do to help empower our communities to improve their health. The panel participants, moderated by Dr. Paula Palmer, included representatives from Healthy Rancho, The Latino Health Collaborative, WINCART, and SAATH. In March we hosted a Public Health Internships Panel, moderated by Dr. Paul Torrens, to expose students to possible sites of internship as well as learn how our panelists navigated their way through their internship and the professional paths that lead them to where they are today. Panelists included Evy Trevino/Healthy Communities Program, San Bernardino County Health Dept.; Jeannette Hughes, MPH, CHES ’12/ Reach Out; Kimberly Morales Johnson, MPH/RSBCIHI Diabetes Program; Elvira Garay, MPH, MCHES/Health Educator II Kaiser Permanente; Kevin Meconis, MPH/Epidemiologist Riverside County Health Agency; Martha Valencia, MPH, MCHES/Community Benefit Health Manager Kaiser Permanente Fontana & Ontario Medical Centers-San Bernardino County; and Marci Aguirre, MPH – Director of Community Outreach for Inland Empire Health Plan.
This was also our first year participating in the National Cesar Chavez Blood Drive Challenge in which we hosted two blood drives as well Be The Match bone marrow registry registrations. In honor of Public Health Week in April we hosted a Public Health week film screenings of the Academy Award nominated documentary How to Survive a Plague and Michael Moore's Sicko. Our last big event of the year was SGCH's Day At the Park. It was a day filled with fun, food, friends and family in which were hosted a raffle fundraiser for San Bernadino's Kids Come First clinic. We were able to raise $200 for Kids Come First while building community amongst our students and community members.
This year SCGH had the honor of hosting commencement and the honorary degree recipients. SCGH student ambassadors escorted Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Dr. J. Mario Molina of Molina Healthcare, Dr. David Kessler former director of the FDA, Raynard S. Kington, president of Grinell College and Dr. David Blumenthal, president of the Commonwealth Fund. In addition, graduating students had a chance to talk to these honorary degree recipients at the commencement reception at Union on Yale.
