After several years of discussion about the character of doctoral education in the U.S. and at CGU, our faculty voted in spring 2003 to add the transdisciplinarity core course requirement for doctoral students. At that time, President Steadman Upham described these courses as instilling "a sense of intellectual curiosity and courage in students and faculty" to step beyond their disciplinary boundaries to examine complex problems.
Beginning in 2005, the Transdisciplinary Program expanded its activities beyond managing the Transdisciplinary Course, supporting faculty and graduate student research, as well as programming open to the CGU community.
Since 2014, the Transdisciplinary Studies Program has focused its programming around themes that connect the CGU schools and centers. The initiatives include:
