Driving Organic Growth


Bernard J. Jaworski

Bernie is the Peter F. Drucker Chair of Management and Liberal Arts at the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. Prior to this appointment he was the Executive Vice President, IMD, North America. Bernie was a Senior Partner and President of Monitor Executive Development. Within Monitor, he also held the post of senior leader and co-founder of Marketspace – the e-commerce practice. He simultaneously held the Markets Chair in Monitor University. He previously was the Jeanne and David Tappan Marketing Fellow and a tenured, Full Professor of Marketing at the University of Southern California. He has also served on the faculty at the University of Arizona and was a Visiting Professor at Harvard Business School.

Research Scholarship. Bernie has been ranked as one of the top five marketing scholars based on both the number of publications as well as citation analysis in the most highly regarded marketing journals see, for example, Helm et al 2003). Two of his articles are among the top 10 most cited articles in the Journal of Marketing over the past 25 years. He is a two-time recipient of the Alpha Kappa Psi award for best managerial article published in the Journal of Marketing. He also received the JAMS best-paper award. Finally, he received the Jagdish Sheth award for long term contributions to the discipline of marketing. His research is largely centered on how to build customer/market driven companies. He has served on the review boards of the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, and other journals. He has co-authored three textbooks on e-commerce, including Introduction to e-Commerce and Internet Marketing. His most recent book (with Jeffrey Rayport) is “Best Face Forward” published by Harvard Business School Publishing (2005).

University Teaching. Bernie has taught a variety of undergraduate, MBA, and PhD courses in sales, marketing, and strategy. He co-developed and co-led the core MBA curriculum in e-commerce at USC. During his tenure at USC, he received the Golden Apple Award as the MBA teacher of the year at USC – as voted by the MBA student body. He employs a wide variety of pedagogical approaches – including cases, experiential exercises, just-in-time learning, and other custom interventions. Executive Development.Bernie’s executive development experience has involved a broad array of B2B and consumer companies including such industries as telecommunications, insurance, construction, semi-conductors, media, software, agribusiness, bio-technology, pharmaceuticals, and health care. He has taught a diverse array of topics from including leadership, corporate strategy, service management, and marketing. He has taught extensively in Asia, Europe, and North America. From 1993 to 1998, he served as Dean of Texas Instrument’s Virtual University.

Advisory. Bernie has also led a number of consulting engagements principally in the strategy and marketing areas. In this capacity he played a “senior partner” role in guiding several fundamental organizational transformations. These have ranged across a number of industries including technology and life science firms.
