Tom Connelly, Cultural Studies
"I am pursuing a doctorate degree in the Cultural Studies program with an emphasis on cinema and media studies. I was born in Newburgh, New York, located in the beautiful Hudson Valley. I am an independent filmmaker, musician and writer. In 1991, I was playing drums for a hardcore/thrash metal band and was interested in sound recording. I enrolled in the Communications and Media Arts program at Dutchess Community College. During my last year of course work, my interest in cinema came unexpectedly while taking a media production course. In 1993, I enrolled in C.W. Post, Long Island University’s cinema program where I received my BFA in film studies and production. In 2005, I was accepted into University of Vermont’s English MA program to continue my studies in cinema and theory. My master’s thesis explored the subject of desire and minimalism in Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry. Currently, I am working on my dissertation, which explores new media technologies and their effects upon perceptions of time and space in cinema and television at the turn of the millennium. I recently self-published my first novel entitled 'The Postcard.'"
