Associations in which Education Faculty and Students are Strongly Involved: 
 

ASHE (Association for the Study of Higher Education)
 
This is the primary association for students and faculty in higher education programs. They hold an annual fall conference in which CGU has been significantly involved.
 
AERA (American Educational Research Association)
 
AERA is the major professional organization for all educators (it currently has 23,000 members). Its Division J is dedicated to postsecondary education and many members of ASHE are also join Division J. AERA J and ASHE have even joined to produce a website devoted to collecting syllabi of classes in the field of higher education. The past three years of The PEN: The Newsletter of Division J are also available.
 
AAC&U (Association of American Colleges and Universities)
 
They have a very good database of resources on diversity in higher education. The AAC&U and the University of Maryland sponsor the Diversity Works Leaders' Guide, a constantly expanding collection of materials on diversity in higher education.
 
AAUP (American Association of University Professors)
 
This organization is the primary professional association for faculty. They have a wide range of resources on their webpage, including selected full-text articles from recent issues of their magazine, Academe.

AAHE (American Association for Higher Education)
AAHE envisions a higher education enterprise that helps all Americans achieve the deep, lifelong learning they need to grow as individuals, participate in the democratic process, and succeed in a global economy. In addition, AAHEBulletin.com invites article submissions, and users can get monthly online newsletter of the AAHE.


National Education Organizations:  

ACE (American Council on Education)

The American Council on Education, founded in 1918, is the umbrella organizational for national education associations. 

AAHE (American Association of Higher Education)

AAHE states their mission as, "AAHE is the individual membership organization that promotes the changes higher education must make to ensure its effectiveness in a complex, interconnected world. The association equips individuals and institutions committed to such changes with the knowledge they need to bring those changes about."  

AAU (Association of American Universities)

The AAU is oriented more toward research universities.

Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching

The Foundation has published several key reports, some of which are available in full-text on their website, including their definitive classification of institutions and College: The Undergraduate Experience in America.  

Community College Leadership Development Initiatives 

CGS (Council of Graduate Schools)

CGS has a bunch of publications of interest to graduate students.  

AGB (Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges)

The AGB is the primary organization for higher education trustees and boards of directors. They publish Trusteeship but require a membership number to review its archives.  

CIC (Council of Independent Colleges)

The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) is an association of more than 460 independent, liberal arts colleges and universities which provides services that help its member institutions enhance educational programs, improve their administrative and financial performance, and increase their institutional visibility.  

AAUW (American Association of University Women)

The AAUW has a fine set of links to web sources on women and girls' education.  

AIR (Association for Institutional Research)

This is the main organization for institutional researchers. They also sponsor projects and workshops.  

AEA (American Evaluation Association)

AEA is an international professional association of evaluators devoted to the application and exploration of program evaluation, personnel evaluation, technology, and many other forms of evaluation.  

NAS (National Association of Scholars)

The NAS is a conservative faculty organization with lots of interesting reports available.

The Education Trust

The Education Trust works for the high academic achievement of all students at all levels - kindergarten through college.

NEA (National Education Association)

NEA has a long history as the nation's leading organization committed to advancing the cause of public education.

Pathways to College Network

The National Pathways to College Network represents an historic alliance between 16 major education partners, six national funders and the U.S. Department of Education to share best practices and influence policy that will put more students on the path to college. The National Pathways to College Network is the first network of organizations and practitioners collaborating to improve college access for students.

California Teacher Association Scholarships


FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education)

FIPSE is a part of the Office of Postsecondary Education in the U. S. Department of Education. Its main activity each year is conducting a grant program to support educational reform projects that can serve as national models.  

Ford Foundation

The Ford Foundation, with almost $10 billion in assets, funds many projects in education and diversity issues. 

James Irvine Foundation

"The Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the social, economic, and physical quality of life throughout California, and to enriching the State's intellectual and cultural environment. Within these broad purposes, the Foundation supports arts, community development, health, higher education, and youth programs." The Irvine Foundation has supported several projects for the Center.  

Haynes Foundation

"The John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation, a private foundation established in 1926, makes grants for study and research in the social sciences with an emphasis on policy issues of the greater Los Angeles region."

Sloan Foundation

Sloan offers grants to study higher education issues, particularly in science, mathematics, and engineering.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

The Mellon Foundation offers grants in many areas of higher education. Its programs are detailed in William Bowen's 1997 President's Report. Included is a description of their involvement with JSTOR, the electronic journal database, and the construction of the College and Beyond database, which served as the foundation for Bowen and Derek Bok's, The Shape of the River.  

W. M. Keck Foundation

"The W. M. Keck Foundation is one of the nation's largest philanthropic organizations. Established in 1954 by the late William Myron Keck, founder of The Superior Oil Company, the Foundation's grantmaking is focused primarily on the areas of medical research, science, and engineering. The Foundation also maintains a program for liberal arts colleges and a Southern California Grant Program that provides support in the areas of civic and community services, health care and hospitals, precollegiate education, and the arts."

Lumina Foundation

Lumina Foundation for Education, a private, independent foundation, strives to help people achieve their potential by expanding access and success in education beyond high school.


Testing Organizations:  

Educational Testing Service

ETS, the people who bring you the GRE, SAT, and TOEFEL exams, have tons of research and literature on testing, college admissions, and related topics.  

The College Board

The College Board is composed of many member institutions, deals with issues of access to higher education, and oversees the admission testing administered by ETS. Here you'll find tons of research and literature on testing, college admissions, and related topics.


Unions:  

NEA (National Education Association)

The NEA, as most know, is the nation's largest union for educators. It has an extensive program oriented to higher education (directed by CGU graduate Christine Maitland), including a good set of higher education links. A full-text archive of articles from their journal, Thought and Action, is also available--going back to 1993.  

AFT (American Federation of Teachers)

The AFT, affiliated with the AFL-CIO, is the other major union for educators. They also have a higher education department with many resources.


Science Organizations:  

AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science)

The AAAS is a professional society dedicated to the advancement of scientific and technological excellence in all disciplines and to the public's understanding of science and technology.  

National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency that promotes the progress of science and engineering.  


Policy Research Centers:  

NCPI (National Center for Postsecondary Improvement)

NCPI's mission is to provide leadership for the transformation and improvement of postsecondary education in its diverse forms from research universities and comprehensive colleges to community colleges and vocational-technical schools.  

National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education

The aim of the Center is to provide and stimulate leadership in the search for answers to critical questions about state and national priorities for higher education. The Center's projects and activities will be characterized by a bias toward action.  

NCTLA (National Center for Postsecondary Teaching, Learning, and Assessment)

The National Center on Postsecondary Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (NCTLA) is a research, development, and dissemination center that seeks to discover what facilitates student learning. NCTLA comprises faculty, administrators, and researchers at Penn State, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Syracuse University, Northwestern University, Arizona State University, and the University of Southern California.  

HEES (Higher Education Extension Service)

The Higher Education Extension Service is a not-for-profit public charity founded in 1988 at Yale University which "helps colleges and universities retain and promote the achievement of students who have difficulty meeting their educational goals." They have a full-text database of their journal on line.
