Mentor LA (MLA)

Position: PREP Director

Mentor LA (MLA) is seeking a full-time site-director to implement its unique PREP model for school reform at a well-known Los Angeles-area public high school. This position will work alongside the school’s principal to co-manage aspects of the school’s operation in an unprecedented partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)—a hybrid public-private collaboration.
MLA is a 501c3 non-profit organization working to revitalize the schools and
neighborhoods of some of the most disenfranchised communities in Los Angeles.

In early 2006, MLA acquired the Center for Innovative Education (known as “ie”) to focus on the unique problems faced by urban public schools. MLA takes root in large, traditional public high schools and through an innovative and collaborative model called PREP, converts these schools into smaller, more proficient learning environments. The PREP model takes the most inventive and effective practices of high-performing preparatory schools and implements them within schools that have a history of low performanceand marginalization. By providing equal access to a significant education, PREP ensures that the most underserved students excel in school, graduate on time and pursue a college education. MLA is seeking dynamic leaders in education reform with expertise in urban education and youth development to act as PREP directors at select school sites.

The position of PREP Director will work side-by-side with the school’s principal to accomplish anuncompromising vision for the school, manage partnerships with outside organizations, support the professional development of the school’s teaching and administrative staff, and ensure adherence to LAUSD’s and MLA’s goals for school reform. PREP Directors will also directly supervise a staff of 4-6 full time coordinators. The ideal candidate will relate well to MLA’s unconventional and entrepreneurial style, and will approach his/her work with the same progressive, experimental thinking. Qualified candidates will have at a minimum 7 years experience in teaching, curriculum design, school administration and leadership, and/or education policy. An advanced degree in education or related field is required. Compensation is competitive.
