Email and network accounts on campus: The Office of Information Technology will create your new accounts prior to the start of the semester. We will provide you with your account information at your department orientations. Please be advised that all official university communications are sent only to cgu.edu email accounts and all students are accountable for the messages sent by university administrators. Any student who prefers to use a personal or work email account must have the cgu.edu mail account forwarded to that preferred account. You can do this with the help of OIT (Office of Information Technology). The helpdesk is located in ACB 109 or you can visit one of the student labs for assistance. Please masure to have with you your student ID. Click here for more details on CGU email.

Once you have your network access you can also log on to the Claremont Graduate University interactive student portal at https://my.cgu.edu. The portal provides real-time access to all of your academic information and once you log on you can securely generate transcripts, degree audits, and enrollment verifications. You can also review your grades, class schedules, financial aid awards, and your student account and financial aid information.

Student ID Card: The Claremont Card Center (located in McAlister Hall, lower level. 919 North Columbia Ave., at 10th Street & Columbia Ave),will take pictures and issue ID cards  anytime within the first two weeks of classes. Your ID card is required for access to the library and to receive services around campus.

 Buying your Books:

Books for your courses may be purchased at Huntley Bookstore. You may also purchase CGU clothing and gifts, snacks, school supplies, discounted computers (Apple and PC), software, and other sundry items. Alternatively, you may also determine which books you need at the bookstore and order them online or elsewhere. Some professors will assign reading packets rather than books and will give instructions on how to purchase them in class.

Library Access: Your campus ID card serves as your library card. The card must be presented when checking out library materials, renewing books, paying bills, etc. The Libraries of the Claremont Colleges, especially Honnold/Mudd Library, contain extensive holdings that students may check out. Graduate students have a 28-day (renewable) loan period and there is a limit of 140 books that may be checked out to graduate students at any given time. More information on location, hours, and check-out privileges may be found at http://libraries.claremont.edu/

Housing: The Housing Office can assist you in locating a residence.  You can reach their office via email at: lavons@cuc.claremont.edu or visit the CUC Office of Real Estate and Housing web site. They update their "Housing Referral Service" listings daily, and they provide an apartment directory as well as a list of hotels/motels and storage facilities to make your transition to Claremont go more smoothly. We encourage international students to contact International Place for additional information and assistance with housing arrangements.

Health Insurance: The Claremont Colleges offers health insurance to both domestic and international students. Brochures about health insurance for all students are available in the Student Affairs Office. International students must show verification of health insurance to the International Student Coordinator before registration, or purchase coverage when registering.

Getting Around on Campus: A map of CGU may be found here, and a full color map of the Claremont Colleges is located here.  A visitor's guide to CGU may be found here, and contains a smaller map, driving directions, campus dining locations, and more.

Parking on Campus: All students with cars need a parking pass, however, the parking pass is free. In the first few days of the semester, Campus Security will be available at CGU in a central location so you can obtain a parking pass or you can visit the Campus Security Office at 251 E. Eleventh Street to obtain a pass. Campus Security is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please have your driver's license and vehicle registration.

Your Financial Aid Award: There are three types of financial aid awarded by CGU. The first is a tuition fellowship offered by the department, the second is a research assistant or teaching position offered by the department, and the third is a loan, either offered by the government or by another source. You should already have received a statement from the Office of Student Financing detailing your tuition fellowship information. Regrettably, once the department has made its funding award an increase is not possible.

The School of Arts and Humanities has a very limited number of Research Assistant (RA) and Teaching Assistant (TA) positions available for the simple reason that we educate only master's and doctoral students. The RAs and TAs that we do employ are selected directly by our faculty and receive compensation in the form of payment, rather than tuition reduction. As a general rule, the faculty select continuing students for these positions. If you would like to be considered for either an RA or TA position please contact your faculty advisor and let him or her know that you wish to be considered if such a position becomes available.

There are loan options for domestic and international students and loans may often be taken out even if the federal deadline (March 2) has passed. Please contact the Office of Student Financing for more information.

Your Bill: Your bill for each semester is generated from the classes in your registration. If there are any changes to be made to your fall course schedule, you must do so before the end of the Add/Drop period. The Add/Drop period ends on February 5, 2008 (for Spring 2008 semester) and this is the last day to add classes or make changes to your schedule (The last day to drop classes is listed on the student calendar for each semester). Make sure all your changes are taken care of before the end of that day, as registering or making changes after that day will incur a $140 late fee. An online billing option is available, and you are responsible for setting up this process. You may find out about our payment options by visiting the Office of Student Accounts web page.

Other Resources: There are several offices on campus that are here to make your time with CGU more pleasant. Make sure to utilize them!
