e-Health: A Special Issue of the e-Service Journal
Scheduled for Publication in Winter 2007

Guest Editors
Vance Wilson, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Thomas Horan, Claremont Graduate University

Submission Deadline
December 3, 2006

The Domain of e-Health
e-Health describes the union of Internet technologies with services across informational, clinical, and administrative dimensions of healthcare, a union that can bring all amenable aspects of healthcare online. This special issue recognizes the unique and substantial role e-Health has begun to play in the lives of patients and caregivers, physicians and clinicians, and healthcare administrators and staff. Because the e-Health discipline is still relatively new and unfocused, the special issue also provides an opportunity for authors to propose research agendas, categorization schemes, theoretical concepts, and new directions in e-Health development.

Potential topics include:

  • Defining and differentiating emerging e-Health categories and themes
  • Identifying user and community needs for e-health services
  • Adoption among patients and providers
  • Human-computer interaction and usability
  • Performance assessment and economic evaluation
  • Quality assurance and evaluation
  • Consumer-driven and patient-centered health information systems (HIS)
  • Integration and interoperability of e-Health with external systems
  • Security, privacy, and confidentiality
  • Access to underserved populations
  • Laws, regulations, and standards
  • Governmental policy
  • e-Health architectures
  • Design studies and application-specific research in sub-areas, such as
    • Personal health records (PHR)
    • Patient-physician communication
    • Medication management and prescription automation
    • Appointment scheduling
    • Motivational and reminder systems (e.g., smoking cessation)
    • Education and training
    • Patient monitoring and instrumentation (e.g., electrocardiogram)
    • Mobile devices

For feedback on these or other topics you are interested in pursuing, please contact the guest editors prior to the submission deadline with an abstract or description of the work. Papers submitted to the Kay Center for E-Health Research 2006 Symposium will also be considered for publication in this special edition. Information on the Kay-CGU symposium is available at: http://www.cgu.edu/pages/4219.asp.
