Department of Politics and Policy

The Department of Politics and Policy weaves broad theoretical concerns about politics and political values with more focused questions of applied policy analysis. The purpose is to prepare students for a variety of careers in university teaching, non-profit organizations, government, consulting, and business. A significant number of students direct their studies and careers toward participation in the international arena.

We offer five (5) master's degree programs in international studies, political economy, public policy, American politics, and politics, economics and business - students concentrate on one primary area of study. The intersection of these various tracks provides for challenging and exciting areas of research. Ph.D. degree students are expected to become proficient in two qualifying areas. The areas most frequently chosen for study are world politics, comparative politics, American politics, methods, public policy, and political philosophy.  We also offer an Interfield PhD in Political Science-Economics and a dual PhD in Political Science/MBA degree program.

In addition to these areas, students may develop individualized programs of study tailored to their special interests and career objectives. The personalized style of work at Claremont Graduate University enables politics and policy students to complement their studies with work in history, economics, psychology, and other related fields.

Among the distinctive features of the department are its emphasis on the connection between values and practice. In policy internships, policy research clinics, and many research projects, faculty joins with students to examine a wide range of domestic and international policy issues.

The Department of Politics and Policy is still accepting applications for the Fall Semester 2008. Interested students may apply ONLINE at www.cgu.edu or by contacting Laura Carrillo, SPE Recruiting/Admissions Coordinator at (909) 621-8699 or by email at Laura.Carrillo@cgu.edu
