Philip H. Dreyer

Philip H. Dreyer, Ph.D., is a lifespan developmental psychologist who studies how people change as they make the journey from birth to death, from cradle to grave.  He is particularly interested in how people understand themselves and how they achieve a sense of meaning and purpose within the context of their family and school experiences.   He has written over 40 articles and books about these topics and leads life span developmental psychology and educational evaluation seminars at The Claremont Graduate University where he is Professor of Education and Psychology and former Director of the Institute for Developmental Studies.  In 1998, he took the position of Associate Provost for Research at Claremont Graduate University and in 2002 he became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  In this role he has responsibility for the eight schools that make up the University and all matters related to faculty, curriculum, student achievement, and research. 

Educated at Harvard (B.A. with honors), Yale (M.A.T.), and The University of Chicago (M.A., Ph.D.), Mr. Dreyer taught social studies at Evanston Township High School in Illinois and trained teachers at the University of Illinois Chicago Circle Campus before joining the faculty of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he taught developmental psychology and educational psychology.  Since coming to Claremont Graduate University in 1976, his research and teaching have involved three areas:  psychosocial development of children and adolescents with particular attention to issues of self-esteem and identity formation,  evaluation of educational programs of all types, and the study of reading and literacy development in people of all ages.

He has served as President the Society for Research on Identity Formation (SRIF) and as Director of The Claremont Reading Conference, from which he edited The Claremont Reading Conference Yearbook series, now in its 66th edition.  In addition he has served as consultant to numerous public and private schools, universities, and corporations about issues related to staff development and program evaluation.
