The Dean of Students and Campus Life serves as an advocate for students and plays a critical role in expanding the Dean of Students Office with emergency support and outreach to students. The Dean serves as the primary case manager to serious health issues and significant personal matters among all graduate students; administers student case management and coordinates interventions; collaborates with the Monsour Counseling Center and Campus Security in support of students in distress; serves as Title IX Coordinator; and consults with the University community on how to respond to student issues of concern; is responsible for the development, compliance, communication, and education of the campus community on policies and procedures affecting student life, including the code of conduct. This position is responsible for the revision and updating of policies to reflect compliance with all university, state, and federal regulations such as the Jeanne Clery Act, Title IX, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), FERPA, HIPPA, ADA, and other mandates, coupled with corresponding response, reporting, training, and related requirements.

Success in this role will depend greatly upon a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and building and sustaining positive and effective working relationships with colleagues, students, faculty, the Claremont University Consortium, and the local community. The Dean of Students reports to the AVP of Student Services, working closely with all the offices of Student Services.


1. Lead, manage and assess all areas within the Dean of Students office including the Office of Student Life, Diversity, and Leadership.

2. Serve as the chief student conduct/grievance officer. Review, update and implement code of conduct in collaboration with appropriate faculty, staff and students.

3. Serve as the first point of contact for student crisis situations, working with appropriate departments and staff members, including but not limited to, Campus Safety, the Monsour Counseling & Psychological Services, or any outside constituent such as the police department and health care services.

4. Serve as the disability services coordinator. Conduct student intakes and prescribe reasonable accommodations in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

5. Serve as a support to the Director of Housing Operations, especially when issues of concern involving student residents are reported.

6. Oversee the management, negotiation, and update of CGU’s student health insurance program.

7. Serve as Title IX coordinator and Human Rights Officer for students. Work closely with appropriate staff regarding policy and procedures in this area. Provide appropriate educational activities and record keeping.

8. The Dean of Students serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) for Clery reporting purposes and fulfills all responsibilities associated with the CSA designation.

9. Through coordination with the Student Life, Diversity, and Leadership administrator, serves in an advisory capacity to the Graduate School Council (GSC).

10. Facilitate collaborative discussions with critical areas such as Academic Affairs, the Registrar’s, Financial Aid, and Admissions offices.

11. Collaborate with Admissions to coordinate the dissemination of information and materials regarding campus life and student affairs to prospective and newly matriculated students throughout the recruitment and admissions process.

12. Serve on CGU and consortium-wide committees, including but not limited to Diversity & Inclusion, Petitions & Appeals, Retention, Student Deans Committee, Disability Coordinators, Title IX Working Group, I-Place advisor board.

13. Perform other duties, responsibilities, or special projects as assigned by the AVP of Student Services.


Master’s Degree in higher education administration, public administration, counseling, or related field required along with six years of progressive and increasing responsibilities for developing and leading programs within student affairs on a University campus; advanced knowledge and skills related to student conduct administration, risk management, crisis management, and related compliance requirements; contemporary understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; and superior communication skills including demonstrated skills as effective presenter/facilitator are required. Minimum five years of successful progressive professional experience, and previous experience in Student Affairs with a working knowledge of functional units or any combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and ability. Other required skills: Demonstrated case management skills; strong working knowledge and understanding of established professional codes of ethics and best practices for Student Affairs professionals; demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusiveness and cultural competence; experience working with underrepresented students; experience and understanding of current issues and developments in judicial affairs, services for students with disabilities, college student retention, and college student housing; exemplary and proven organizational, leadership, and supervisory skills; outstanding verbal, writing, and presentation skills. Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and all external constituencies; and proficiency in computer skills including MS Word, Excel, databases, electronic communication, the Internet and web based applications.
